Sulfur Deficiency

Description

Sulfur (S) is often called the fourth major nutrient for roses, after nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. It is a building block of the amino acids cysteine and methionine, forming the disulfide bridges that shape proteins and enzymes; without enough sulfur, enzymes lose their function and growth stalls. Sulfur is also involved in chlorophyll formation, so an adequate supply keeps foliage a deep, durable green while also producing thicker petals, longer-lasting colour and sturdier flower stalks.

The key to recognising the deficiency: sulfur is immobile in the plant (it cannot be withdrawn from old leaves to feed new growth), so symptoms always appear on the young leaves and shoot tips first. This is exactly what separates it from nitrogen deficiency, which begins on the old lower leaves.

Sulfur deficiency is most common on sandy, heavily-leached soils, on soils low in organic matter, or where only concentrated sulfur-free fertilisers (urea, DAP) have been used for a long time.

Symptoms

  • Symptoms appear first on the young leaves and shoot tips — because sulfur is immobile, the plant cannot move it from old leaves up to new growth (unlike nitrogen, which always starts on the old lower leaves)
  • Young leaves fade to a pale lime-yellow uniformly across the whole blade — both the tissue and the veins pale together, without the green veins that mark iron or manganese deficiency
  • Stunted plant with few new shoots, shortened internodes and slow growth even when nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are all adequate
  • New leaves emerge pale green and smaller than normal
  • Flower buds are smaller than usual and washed-out in colour, not reaching the cultivar's characteristic vividness

Treatment plan

The goal is to get sulfur back into the new growth quickly and re-stabilise the soil supply.

  • Foliar spray first (fastest): Use Epsom salt (MgSO₄) at 0.5–1% or dilute potassium sulphate, spraying both leaf surfaces evenly in the early morning or late afternoon, repeated every 10–14 days to restore colour to the young leaves.
  • Feed the root zone: Switch part of your fertiliser to a sulfur-containing product such as ammonium sulphate (SA) or potassium sulphate (SOP) in place of sulfur-free urea/DAP. Gypsum (calcium sulphate) is another option that adds sulfur and calcium without changing pH.
  • Correct pH if needed: On alkaline soil (pH > 7), apply elemental sulfur to lower pH gradually, which also improves uptake of other micronutrients.

Important notes for roses:

  • Do not spray sulfur products above 32°C — it readily causes serious leaf burn.
  • Avoid spraying elemental sulfur directly onto the blooms — it leaves a white residue and an unpleasant smell on the petals.
  • Do not tank-mix sulfate fertilisers with soluble calcium — the two precipitate, clogging emitters and wasting the feed.

Leaves that have yellowed badly will not fully green up again, but healthy green new growth is the sign the treatment is working.

Prevention

  • Fertilise in a balanced way, favouring sulfur-containing products (SA, SOP, mid-/micronutrient blends) rather than sulfur-free concentrates alone.
  • Add organic matter (well-rotted manure, worm castings) to hold and release sulfur into the soil.
  • Run a soil test every 2–3 years to track pH and available sulfur.
  • For drip-fed cut-flower roses, keep the sulfur concentration around 50–100 ppm in the nutrient solution.

Recommended products

Epsom salt (magnesium sulphate, MgSO4)

A white crystalline solid, fully water-soluble, supplying both magnesium and sulphur at once. It is the fastest, cheapest foliar way to bring colour back to young leaves under sulphur shortage. Mix at 0.5–1%, spray both leaf surfaces evenly in the early morning or late afternoon, and repeat every 10–14 days. Do not spray above 32°C to avoid leaf scorch.

Ammonium sulphate (SA, 21-0-0 + 24% S)

A soil fertiliser supplying nitrogen and sulphur together with a fast response. Use it to replace part of the urea/DAP (which carry no sulphur) in your feeding programme, adding durable sulphur to the soil. Apply around the root zone at the label rate and water in well; well suited to alkaline soils as it slightly lowers pH.

Potassium sulphate (SOP, 0-0-50 + 18% S)

A chloride-free source of potassium and sulphur, ideal for roses through budding and bloom. It both supplies sulphur and helps produce thicker petals, longer-lasting colour and sturdier flower stalks. Dilute for a foliar spray or root drench at the recommended rate. Note — do not tank-mix with soluble calcium fertilisers, as the two precipitate.
